Article Writing is Not Social Media
One site I didn't mention in 13 Sites I Use and Why is EzineArticles.com.
The reason is that article writing — and especially article marketing — is not social media marketing. They're similar and have a lot in common, but article marketing requires more respect than to lump it in with social media.
Let's say all of it together is your business wardrobe — all your advertising and marketing.
Social media, classified ads, blogging, business cards... these are the clothes you wear everyday. They're your jeans, casual pants, shirts and shoes.
Articles, press releases, four-colour brochures... these are clothes you wear that get dry cleaned. They're your suits and dress, fine shirts and blouses.
It's all clothing, right? You wear whatever you need based on the occasion.
That means you don't wear a suit to play baseball, fix the car or bake a cake. Fancy clothes cost a little more, take a little more care, and often last a little longer.
In the same way, articles should get a little more attention than you give to preparing a blog post. For example, I write for The Marketing Spotlight (my blog), Technorati, and to produce articles.
The tone I use for each is slightly different.
The Marketing Spotlight is my own living room or business space. This is where I can be the most relaxed and conversational with readers. Reading content on my blog shows my personality and working style the most clearly.
When I'm writing for Technorati - like this post - my tone is slightly more formal. Think of it as that slight change in behaviour we all experience when we're at friend's house.
Maybe you use "please and thank you" more often with friends. Or you make sure your hair is brushed. Writing for Technorati means I'm in someone else's house, so I'm a little more well-mannered, I suppose.
