Cannabis Coming Soon To a TV Near You

In America this week a TV commercial advertising medical cannabis was broadcast on the Fox network's Sacramento affiliate KTXL. And just like when the first Viagra ads appeared during the half-time interval at the Super Bowl recently, the reaction to this new turn in how cannabis is sold as a legal medicine, has been mixed.

On the one hand the conservatives (they're called Republicans in the US) see this as nothing more than a clumsily implemented PR campaign aimed at the ultimate and outright legalisation of cannabis. Perhaps they have a point?

In the red corner however, people are saying, "Why not?"

Pharmaceutical 'direct-to-consumer' advertising of prescription drugs has long been legal in the USA, and as cannabis is now available with a doctors recommendation it was only a matter of time before someone gave it a try with medical cannabis too.

Aaron Houston, co-director of the US Just Say Now campaign, which supports decriminalisation of cannabis, told the paper: "We should give the individual US states the ability to regulate cannabis just like alcohol. This is an idea whose time has come."

However here in the UK the advertisment would never be shown as prescription drug advertising on any kind is supposedly, illegal.

Although with the Eli Lily "40 over 40" cialis campaign showing on our screens after 9pm it would seem the ad agencies are already coming up with ways to circumvent that particular chapter of the rule book .
