It’s December and time for astrologers, palm readers and economic pundits to announce their predictions for 2012 and there’s no shortage of opinions. The same goes for interpretations of startup business success and failure rates. They range from unnecessarily depressing to moderately optimistic, to credibly rosy.

But, do the forecasts matter? Let’s stick to the basics: Do you want to run a business of your own? If the answer is yes, then that’s the only argument you really need. But in case you’re still on the fence, here are 5 more reasons to start your new business in 2012:

1. “Success Is Dependent on Effort” — Those were Sophocles’ words and he was no dummy. The only way to reach your goal of owning your own business is to quit procrastinating and take some concrete steps – any steps – toward your goal today. And then do it again tomorrow. Planning is useful, but not if it goes on forever. You’ll adjust as you go – that’s the nature of beginnings. Hey, do you really want to look back in 3 years and ask yourself why you’re still someone’s employee? Get moving!

2. The Layoffs Won’t Stop – Big job cuts weren’t invented in this recession. They are a normal part of the open market system. Historically, sometimes the economy is good; sometimes it ain’t. Sometimes they’re hirin’; sometimes they ain’t. So, if you’re tired of other people telling you when you can and cannot work, become your own boss. You’ll at least have something to say about it.

3. Grow or Die  – If you’re stuck in a dead-end job, you might not realize that exciting challenge, ongoing learning and personal expansion are reasonable things to ask of your career. And nothing will help awaken and develop different parts of your brain like the responsibility of “the buck stops here”. It’s the rare person who is skilled at everything. If you’re good at finance, but lack marketing experience – it’s ok. You’ll get help, you’ll learn, you’ll grow!
