As 16 year old Australian Jessica Watson, the youngest person to sail around the world solo, non-stop and unassisted, cruised into Sydney Harbor this evening, we were all reminded that dreams don’t have to be lost causes.

And now, we all get to watch her bask in the glory of her hard work through the clever manipulation of her hot new personal brand.

“Anything really can happen” she said to the Prime Minister of Australia as the pack of frenzied media thronged towards her. “You just have to have a dream, believe in it, and work hard” she said, in front of an exuberant crowd and a live TV audience from throughout the country.

So what, dare I ask, is your “Anything”? And do you have the plan, the skills and the determination to achieve it the way Jessica has?

Jessica Watson did not just dream a dream and click her fingers to one day see it come true. She dreamed a dream planned her execution then worked extremely hard to gain the knowledge and skills she needed to face the toughest conditions that sailors can face.

She then set out on a personal journey to live out her dream, persevering through the discomfort and reality of her choices until the very end. She achieved a remarkable feat for anyone, of any age. Jessica is now one of the most marketable faces in Australia for 2010, and many years to come I suspect. Primarily because she can now be personally branded as someone who will go the distance and tackle every challenge between her dreams and their delivery.

Jessica has set up the perfect foundations for her personal brand that we will no doubt see emerge over coming weeks with the filming of a documentary, and the release of her first book.

Thanks to her hard-won tale of perseverance and completion, her brand will surely look mighty desirable to advertisers and sponsors. And in a public environment jaded by budget critique, super taxes and pollies that don’t persevere with anything, her brand shines a bright light that compels you to consider what you could achieve if you put your dreams down on paper and really worked towards delivering on them.
