Being a Power Broker Starts with a First Impression

First impressions matter, so don't kid yourself into thinking that people will not judge you and our work by the appearance you are representing.

Quite frankly, asking prospects, coworkers and clients to see past our exterior perception is asking too much.

Whether they admit it or not, they can’t. Appearance is the basis of your first impression. So, instead of going against the grain, go with it. Think “dress for success” and experience the power (and influence) of a well crafted first impression.

As an image consultant, having spent my early days on “bended knee” working with some very successful men, I can tell you, successful men use everything they’ve got to support their cause – including their wardrobe.

While a particular businessman looks successful (despite whether or not they actually are successful), the real deal is that they probably have received good advice about the importance of creating a powerful first impression and developing an image of personal style and success.

Power brokers know that every public appearance is an opportunity to solidify their image, reputation and personal brand. They use every tool in their tool chest to communicate who they are and why you should work with them. Simply by showing up well dressed, power brokers attract success and win the jury’s favor

So if you're looking to be a power broker, here's some advice.

First, change your thinking about being judged by what you wear. Instead think about it as an opportunity to create a powerful first impression and support your goals.

Second, it's important to know that success sometimes starts by the way you enter the room.

Third, take heed when I say “I’ve never met a successful man who said “clothing doesn’t matter.” However, I have met a lot of broke ones who say it doesn’t.”

So before you run out on a shopping spree, take note of these tips:

  1. Do I look better than my competitors?
  2. Do I look successful at what I do?
  3. Do I look credible, competent and charismatic?
  4. Do I look like I care enough to invest in myself?
  5. Do I look like I pay attention to detail?

If you answer “no” to any of these questions, the jury verdict is in: go shopping.
