A new indie film set in the early 70's is set to be released on August 27th. The film follows the journey of 17-year old Joe McCain, played by the boyishly handsome Martin Compston, as he discovers enlightenment through music.

SoulBoy, directed by Shimmy Marcus, takes place in 1974, during a rebirth of sorts for American soul music. Much has been made about the British Invasion and how it was a musical reaction to British artists interpreting American black soul and R&B sounds. This follows suit, and it even spawned an underground movement, Northern soul, which inspired the music, dance and youth culture of the time. This is at the heart of SoulBoy's story.

Like most 'coming of age' films, there is a love story, and young Joe finds his muse in a pretty, free-spirited young woman named Jane (Nichola Burley).  It is through Jane that he discovers his passion for dance and soul music, in which he desires to escape his mundane existence.  On the surface, this may all sound familiar, but the music and the enthusiasm of the undiscovered gems in the film help set it apart.  This is a soon-to-be-a-classic sleeper indie film we've come to love from our friends across the pond (think The Full Monty).

Check out the official trailer.
