George Hickenlooper, Cousin to Gubenatorial Candidate John Hickenlooper Dies
George Hickenlooper, cousin to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper running for governor of Colorado, died in Denver, Saturday reportedly from natural causes. George was 47 years old, according to a statement made by Mayor John Hickenlooper. .
George Hickenlooper directed "Casino Jack," starring Kevin Spacey. The film is about a Washington lobbyist who finds himself in hot water after pedaling influence.
Hickenlooper came to Denver to support his cousin’s campaign for the Colorado governorship and attend the Starz Denver Film Festival.
Steven Zeitchik, film critic for the Los Angeles Times, who knew Hickenlooper, described George as “vibrant, candid and articulate” when he met the Mayor’s cousin at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Canada last month.
"There's something unique about the United States, a sense of individual rights and freedoms, and a sense of social and civic responsibility…" Hickenlooper said to Zeitchik.
"We lost that mission in the 1980s and 1990s, when we entered a gilded age, and the culture of individualism became a culture of avarice…That kind of feasting and ravenous thinking has seeped into the pores of our culture such that we've lost a sense of ourselves." Hickenlooper continued.
In 1992, George Hickenlooper won an Emmy Award for directing "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse,". It was a behind-the-scenes look at the problems Director, Francis Ford Coppola, encountered in making of Apocalypse Now.
