Yesterday, another addition to Marvel Comics’ pantheon of heroes-turned actors hit the airwaves with a tantalizing trailer. The Amazing Spider-Man is actually the 4th movie starring the web-slinging hero, who was played by actor Tobey Maguire from 2002 to 2007. New British actor Andrew Garfield will don the red-and-blue as Peter Parker, with love interest Emma Stone playing Gwen Stacy, in the time before the fiery-red-haired Mary Jane. Although the absence of Maguire in the trailer is a bit jarring, fans may find that Andrew Garfield fits this younger, more teenage-angst-filled version of Marvel’s biggest hero better than Tobey, whom we’d seen grow and mature too convincingly during his five-year reign as the web-slinger to turn back the hands of time. Despite the exploration of Spiderman’s early youth, the trailer seems to explore more serious issues; or maybe just the same issues more seriously. Peter Parker’s love interest appears to know his secret, and her father is a policeman chasing Spiderman, ignorant of the fact that he’s had dinner with him (somewhere along the way, Spiderman has become a bit of a karate master – which is always an excellent skill-set to have with superhuman reflexes!). Tying in the suggestion of a sinister end to the lives of his parents at the hands – possibly – of a trusted colleague, Parker is on a collision course with a major enemy that comic book fans know very well – the powerful Lizard; all while being chased by the entire police force of New York.

Opening July 3rd, Spiderman may very well just be a warm-up for what will be the biggest comic-verse movie of the year in The Dark Knight Rises, with The Avengers being the first stop on the express-way. Nonetheless, with the second trailer, the buzz just got louder, and The Amazing Spiderman will surely challenge The Avengers’ take when it opens.
