Glosslip's coverage of the Anonymous vs. Scientology movement is expansive, and we encourage you to educate yourself about Scientology and its campaign to "obliterate psychiatry" as well as the callous abuses it has afflicted on its members and those who dare criticize its actions.
It may seem like an extreme measure to protest Katie Holmes, a mere covert to the religion, but it's important to note that Tom Cruise is the de facto second in command of the Church of Scientology, and has had everyone around him convert to its religious teachings, based on the writings of sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard. Katie, who was a devout Catholic before marrying Tom Cruise, has become a Scientologist as did Tom's second wife, actress Nicole Kidman, and both of his adopted children, sisters and mother.
Katie, whose popularity and acting career centered around her earthy girl-next-door charm, has undergone a dramatic transformation in the public eye. Once a bubbly mid-Western girl from Ohio, Holmes is now often seen wearing the most dour of expressions and is known for vacillating wildly between high fashion couture to unflattering hairstyles and questionable wardrobe choices. To say that marrying Tom Cruise has stifled Holmes' career is a understatement. Cruise and more importantly, Scientology, have altogether extinguished the spark that made America love Katie.
It's difficult to say what this protest will accomplish in the Katie Holmes universe, but it is my hope that it will be the impetus she needs to question a life which has greatly limited her and her family's, cutting her off from a world which once adored her.
