Scientology Founded On Principles Of Dark Magic, Dark Psychology - Page 2
But it didn't end there. L. Ron had a lot of associates that were fellow science fiction writers. The ideas of Robert Heinlein were revolutionary. Issac Asimov had some tremendous ideas. Frank Herbert had a tedious imagination that was unfathomable. He learned from his friends, associates, and even writers he wasn't on good terms with. He studied them. Not to write Dianetics, but to further his skill at con, magic, and life. He stole any ideas he liked, and threw the rest away.
One of his good friends, Werner Erhard, was a frequenter of the Esalen seminars. This was kind of like an open think tank of the best minds of the times. Through this he was introduced to a tremendous amount of revolutionary material. Although the documentation is weak, it is very likely that this is how he learned about The Confusion Technique by Milton Erickson. Milton Erickson was one of the inspirations for the formation of Neuro Linguistic Programming.
So, now L. Ron has a head full of imagery and theory on dark magic, mostly misunderstood badly, as well as a fairly good grasp on the confusion technique, and is obsessed with learning hypnosis and chemically altered states.
Then, without doing any specific research, studies, or anything remotely scientific, L. Ron writes Dianetics as a synthesis of all of this information floating in his head, combined with his sub part writing skills and genius level imagination.
There are a few primary techniques that L. Ron uses in his Dianetics/Scientology works:
1) Confusion Technique: By using language in ways that defies normal logic, grammar, and probably associations, he can communicate an idea with great difficulty, but on purpose. This leaves the mind frazzled, and weakens any resistance to further ideas. As such, then he can make simpler statements that, although they contain logical fallacies, the sudden drop in the stress of having to understand them produces a temporary euphoria, thus creating a conscious/unconscious proof that the fallacious argument is right.2) Word clearing: This is an insidious practice. Notice how if you say the word "banana" 300 times you will suddenly forget what a bannana is? It doesn't even sound like a word? L. Ron uses that to anchor a word with a completely different meaning, creating an anchor between the unconscious original meaning and the conscious new meaning. L. Ron uses the word "bank" to describe a negative aspect of the unconscious mind. With enough associations, it becomes easy to clear one's bank, ie, write checks to Scientology.
