Interview: April's End Lead Guitarist Dan Buquicchio

After my recent interview with New York rockers Ghosts of Eden, I caught up with Dan Buquicchio, the lead guitarist for April's End. These two bands are hot on the list of up-and-coming bands out of Gotham--and they are definitely partners in crime, often performing together.
Both of these killer bands are getting support from GothamRocks and both have self-produced their own E.P.s. Ghosts of Eden released Ignorance and Lies and April's End released the 5 song E.P. Break Through Sorrow.
April's End are tearing up the New York metal scene and Break Through Sorrow is an E.P. that takes no prisoners; killer song writing surrounded by hard-edged, gutsy, melodic, speed metal. They'll be performing at New York's Gramercy Theater on September 11th, you can check out their up-coming concert dates on AprilsEnd.com
I talked to Dan about what it was like to self-produce as well as what inspired the music on Break Through Sorrow. April's End is a female fronted band, so we talked about other similar metal bands I've talked to, like my Mayhem Fest interview with In This Moment, and we also chatted a bit about their lead singer Cy. Dan assured me that, even at 4'11", she is the toughest member of the band, and "vocally, she'd probably kick all of our asses too."
We talked about the bands that inspired him, from The Offspring, to Metallica to the Swedish metal bands that influenced the music on Break Through Sorrow. We also shared an in-depth discussion on the interview I did with Dave Lombardo of Slayer, who were a very big influence on Dan, along with his personal guitar hero, the late Dimebag Darrell.
You can listen to our conversation, and a snippet of "Push" from Break Through Sorrow in the audio intro, along with a bit of "One Chance", a song which Dan describes as being about the importance of taking the opportunity to make up for past mistakes. That fact that you really only get one chance to do that.
"It's about someone really, really fucking something up, and having the opportunity to redeem themselves and make it up to another person. It's basically saying that everybody has one chance and people will forgive you after that. If you continue to screw up after your chance--then you're screwed. But it's saying that everyone has one chance to make things right."
