Audio Interview: Dan Buquicchio of April's End
The most interesting part of our conversation was definitely our discussion of our love for vinyl--records, I mean. We weighed in on the pros and cons of digital media and talked about the discussion I had in my interview with Korn's Ray Luzier. I had asked Ray how the new album, Korn III: Remember Who You Are, was doing, and he had responded that it was "doing great, but for a world of kids stealing music."
Our discussion of Ray's statement began with the fact that bands cannot survive without the support of their fans--record sales are how bands get ranked on the charts, so people who really consider themselves fans should, and must, actually purchase the music of their favorite bands in order to keep them around. Of course, when bands are trying to get their names out there they rely heavily on the digital medium, so it's a catch-22 situation.

Dan said, "The one good thing I think, from all this, is that bands themselves have much more power now to reach a wider audience. We've been really taking advantage of Facebook and MySpace, ReverbNation, iTunes, CD Baby and all the different ways to get our stuff out there on-line. And that's how we get most of our fans."
It's interesting to hear the flip side of that debate from the perspective of those who rely on digital media--and see it as a necessary tool in marketing themselves. A direct contradiction to those who are watching floundering record sales due to illegal downloading. But Dan definitely added a new twist to the debate. He made me realize that there really aren't any easy answers.
