Music lobbyist Dieter Gorny has witnessed what happens when you give up ground in the German metropolis: The Music Week Berlin will incorporate Gorny's Popkomm.

Popkomm music industry says, because of piracy, it's all over: This year's Popkomm in Berlin will not take place. Their official reason: Many companies could no longer afford because of Internet piracy - Popkomm music trade fair for cancels due to piracy.

Dieter Gorny, omnipatente chief lobbyist for the music industry, appears now as the villain. His beautiful Popkomm, co-invented from him and brought from Cologne to Berlin in 2004, also canceled this year by himself because the Internet has broke his baby - now it threatens to drown in the provincial Berlin swamp. All want the Popkomm to happen again in 2010, but not as before: only as a marketplace of the recording industry and its suppliers.

The event in the halls had become much too boring. In addition, a sentiment of watching a dying system and doing nothing crept over us. The music was outsourced to a festival at the other end of town where it wasn't bothering.

Now the interim use becomes permanent institution, a colorful pile of club managers, Internet freaks and indie labels encountered in business and has found Senator Harald Wolf as an important advocate of the idea of a Berlin Music Week. Popkomm will "take place in this context," says Olaf Kretschmar of the Berlin Music Comission in an open letter to Gorny. However: Who needs the Popkomm?

Therefore Gorny's dream of a "grand bargain" has more of a nightmare that sprang from the imagination of a man's potency which represents 90 percent of the German music market. At Echo Awards in March Gorny has provided the way 3,500 guests. Last year there were 10,000. Veeery Big!
