Sex, Violence, Indulgence, Speed and the Super Bowl

I was imagining BIG games in the past. The ones where strong men with well-developed muscles would be on a field for everyone to cheer and jeer, hoping their favorites would win. Those games no longer exist; the ones where it was “to the death”. They took place in the Roman Colosseum. The BIG GAME of modern times has all the noise, the cheering and jeering, the betting, the adulation. Gladly, the “to the death” is now left for the ads.
And that leads to my frustration. Why are so many of the Super Bowl ads filled with violence?
For every one that has a clever moment there are three that are about smash and crash and push and shove.
The one that made me most frustrated was from a nameless car company (I just don’t want to give even a second of acknowledgment to that company). It was an end of the world scenario. One that sadly we can see variations of when we watch the riots and bloodshed on the nightly news.
In this one, there are few survivors and they, the lucky ones, are all celebrating the amazing power of their vehicles to keep going. Keep going? My mind went to the next day when there is no more gasoline to fuel their vehicles and where would they go anyway? I fast forwarded to see this small band of survivors start to fight with each other over some left over pizza rather than come together to rebuild.
Sex, violence, and indulgence really do sell. When are we ever going to demand that advertising agencies take more responsibility rather than adding more pollution into our already dense environment!
Glad when it was time to get back to the game.
