If you head out around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning you may have the opportunity to witness the Leonid Meteor Shower. Depending on your place in the world you could be treated to anywhere from 30-300 shooting stars an hour.
Bloggers offer up some history on the annual show, viewing tips and whether or not they will be dragging themselves out of bed to witness the sky fall.
Geekologie: "For those of you that like to get high and lie in the middle of a field staring up, the Leonid meteor shower is supposed to reach its peak tonight from 1AM to dawn. Great, I'll be hiding in the back of the hallway closet waiting for the apocalypse. It, uh, is 2012, right?"
Universe Today: "The annual Leonid Meteor Shower is about to light up the night… And the time to start watching is now. The year 2009 will not see a Leonid storm, but an outburst for sure. There are still some uncertainties regarding the time of maximum of the 1466 trail. For those of you seeking a definitive date and time, it isn't always possible, but we can learn a whole lot about when and where to look."
Discover: "In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, 2009’s edition of the Leonid meteor shower will reach peak viewing time for sky-watchers in North America. Star gazers who lift their eyes to the heavens between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. will likely be rewarded with a good show of “shooting stars.”"
