Tonight the President will have explained his revised Afghanistan War strategy, one in which a frank discussion of hard and fast deadlines was considered impossible. But that doesn't mean deadlines don't apply "in theatre."

Family members, well-wishers and friends of military service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan — as well as elsewhere — face at least one looming deadline, and this one is hard and fast: December 4.

Holiday Gift Shipping Deadlines to U.S. Military Destinations

If you want to send a holiday gift to military personnel by military mail by space-available parcel airlift mail, the deadline for most locations is December 4. For more, refer to the 2009 shipping calendar page at the USPS website. (For some other military destinations, that deadline was December 1).

There are also numerous contract personnel operating in theatre; these wars aren't limited to uniformed personnel.

If you have no relatives stationed in these areas, but want to contribute something, you can select a four-star rated charity from Charity Navigator (search for "military" and look for four-star rated organizations).  A meaningful choice might be the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
