Life Without Sam

Getting Things Cheap Has a Cost. For years there has been a disconnect between my family’s values and our behavior. A small example - we knew the vast destruction of family owned businesses across the country committed for the Walton family and their minions. But we still owned a Sam's Club membership and bought from
WalMart too,but their bad habits such as sex discrimination were just too much.

We have corrected our bad habit. Thus begins the tale of our adventures in doing something about evil. Make no mistake, Einstein was entirely correct when he said, “The world is a dangerous place. Not because of the people who are evil; but because of the people who don't do anything about it.

One item we bought frequently at Sam’s was a three pound house branded package of shelled almonds. I turned to internet technology to find a replacement. Correct actions are their own reward was the first lesson learned. Money was not saved but let me count the ways value was added. I made a new friend. We happily paid a lot more for farm fresh organic almonds that are far superior to MembersMark brand really cheap almonds of unknown origin. We did that happily because we were supporting people that deserved to succeed at what they are doing, pioneering organic almond production technology. Farming without harming is much higher technology than factory industrialized faux food creation. Enabling nature to do what nature does best is human technology at its peak.

The find was Glenn Anderson and Anderson Almonds . Take a minute to see the gallery and "about us" even if you are allergic to nuts.
Internet technology gives family farmers like the Andersons direct market access to billions of people. But, surprisingly, you cannot place your order online, the Anderson’s want to talk to you on the phone to take your order! So good food came to us in Texas by UPS, but we did not feel that it made our carbon foot print larger. Trees growing naturally offset the small fuel use in shipping.

A family is making a living doing an important thing - selling to people they treat as neighbors even at great distance, and perhaps many of us can learn to do that too.
