An American Flagpole Violates Homeowners Guidelines
During times of national peace and times of national distress/war, the United States has citizens and illegal aliens that fly the colors of the nation. The colors of the United States are RED, WHITE, and BLUE, signified by the thirteen stripes for the original colonies, and 50 stars for the states that make up our national honor. In Virginia, the rules and regulations of the ridiculous seem to pour out of the wood work (from time-to-time), when recognizing this great nation and her hero’s.
Retired Army Col. Van T. Barfoot is a 90-year old Medal of Honor winner, earning it because of the heroic actions of World War II. Mr. Barfoot’s history of defending this nation during a time of war is documented as “standing up to three German takes with a bozooka and stopping their advance.”
Since his retirement, Mr. Barfoot has been a resident in the state of Virginia and lives in a quiet community. Mr. Barfoot recently erected a flag pole on his property to raise the colors of this nation. The United States is a nation that has stood for over 200 years on the principle of freedom for all, with the rights to be an individual of what religion is practiced, information read, and no oppression; however Mr. Barfoot has a encountered a stumbling block of the freedom he helped secured during World War II. The stumbling block is the form of a homeowners’ association advising him that, “the flagpole violates the neighborhood’s aesthetic guidelines.”
Mr. Barfoot is currently not in a World War but a war of “aesthetic guidelines,” to fly the colors of the nation. Mr. Barfoot has been told to "remove the flagpole by Friday, 5 PM, EST." The fight now includes the Senator Mark R. Warner (D-Va.), “to break the impasse.”
When did flying the colors of the nation become such an offense? Why would this be considered offensive, when the association cherishes their freedom? The nation will have a shameful day should Mr. Barfoot lose his bid to have the flagpole on his property to fly the colors of this great nation.
