Helsinki Goes Green With Energy and Hot Water
So many good things happened together. Or one good thing triggered another good thing and resulted in a chain of good things. Ultimately with the good efforts from Helsingin Energia, a Helsinki public energy company is going to generate energy and deliver hot water for the Finnish capital city. It is the initiative of Helsingin Energia who realized the enormous amount of heat getting generated from their huge data center was going to waste and effecting the environment, thereby increasing global warming effect and their carbon footprint. The company decided to utilize this heat by getting it recycled to produce energy. It added up to an additional 1% of their total energy production.
The simple technology used works both ways. First cold water is sent from Helsingin to the data center which helps in cooling data center equipments. Additionally the cold water keeps absorbing the heat generated by the data center thus resulting in hot water that gets supplied straight to the Helsinki city households.
