Sustainability Development Mechanisms Can Have Powerful Role in Africa
The development activities around the world now understand the new mantra of community-based adaptation for poverty eradication in order to reduce the impact of climate change. The developing world communities are concerned about their basic needs like water and food.
The effective method, therefore, is to adapt climate change effects to develop a powerful but simple community based income generation mechanism, like poultry farming, small cattle farming, and cotton weaving (like in Gujarat in India). Local authorities can play an important role in assisting small groups of women who can participate in these income generation methods.
Examples are seen in Ethiopia. In the village of Kebele (village) of Adigrat City in the regional state of Tigray, an integrated sustainable development project started recently in February which involves sustainable livelihood mechanisms (as home based poultry unit), environmental education, water and sanitation development, education for children, and employment for the educated youth and women. According to Mr. Goitom Teklu, manager of Adigrat City and the secretary of the Sustainable Africa Initiative (SAI), the project will involve micro-finance, which can support funding for all other elements mentioned in the integrated sustainability project.
The major obstacles in the development of such sustainable mechanisms, as learned from the Adigrat project and explained by Mr. Goitom, are the low motivation of the people and their lack of faith in such slow-paced and small-income generating mechanisms. Such simple but steady and regular income generating mechanisms can teach many ethical values of life and cultivate man-making qualities like patience, perseverance, faith in the self and cultivation of high self-respect for their self-reliance.
Though Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world, in the future they can have development through self-reliant rural communities. The government, NGOs, and global funding organizations must concentrate on small groups of rural women population, where they can develop self-reliant sustainable mechanisms for regular income generation and thereby bring light of self-reliance in development. Since women are the forefront runners for family development, these type mechanisms can be successfully established by such rural women groups.
