Cuba Prepares Fourth Edition of the International Golf Tournament “Montecristo Cup”

Cuba will host from 19 to 21 March, the fourth edition of the International Golf Tournament “Montecristo Cup”, an event intended to show the world the great potential for the development of this sport, so closely linked to tourism. The Varadero Golf Club will host the competition.

The tournament, the only one of its kind of the Caribbean island, it’s held annually since 2009 in the tourist resort, located about 150 kilometers to the east of Havana.


In this edition, the competition invites amateur players from around the world to compete in three categories: two male and one female, said the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR).


This is definitely the time to enjoy your Cuba holidays. It’s expected the visit of press from all over the world as well as representatives of companies, working indirectly with this segment.


In Cuba, nowadays there are only two fields for this sport: the Varadero Golf Club with 18 holes and 69 hectares, and the other one is in Capdevila, in Havana, but it is much smaller.


However, different experts from all around the world have their opinion. That is the case of Peter Walton, executive chief of the International Association of the Golf Tour Operator, based in London, UK, who believes that Cuba have great potential in this activity.


Now Cancun, the Riviera Maya (Mexico) and the Dominican Republic are three most important tourist sites of the region in terms of golf, with 50 fields qualified as great feats of landscape architecture.


Cuban authorities said they are negotiating with international companies to build 16 fields on the island as a strategy to develop the golf tourism also with the objective of disputing Mexico and Dominican Republic the regional primacy.


Out of the 16 projects approved so far, four of them are in an advanced state of negotiation. One of them will be developed in the eastern province of Holguin, the other in western Pinar del Rio, while the two others include Varadero and Havana, the two most famous Cuban destinations.


With the development of golf competitions, Cuba aims to increase the variety of its offers, one of the strategies for the development of the leisure industry on the island.
