Activists Demand Immigrant Youth Get College Under Dream Act
Little did Gabby Pacheco, Carlos Roa, Juan Rodriguez and Felipe Matos know they were soon to be national heroes in the fight for the rights of undocumented children to go to college. The four students from Miami Dade College took on the daunting challenge of walking 1500 miles from Florida to Washington D.C. Their goal was to break down the stone walls of anti-immigrant sentiment by bringing attention to the problem that undocumented youth face in gaining access to higher learning. During their trek across the Trail of Tears, the walkers, called the Dream Team, captured the imagination and support of millions of young people!
The Dream movement is on! The sense of adventure, of rebellion, of not willing to take no for an answer, while learning to accept others the way they are, hit a popular note in the immigrant community. Soon, students across the country began to dream along with the Dreamers! Now, the students want to do more than dream; they, too, want to walk, and march and tell their stories!
With comprehensive immigration reform mostly a dead duck until after the November elections, the Dream Activists are seeking one last bite at the apple. They are traveling to Washington D.C. this July asking Congress to pass the Dream Act as a separate piece of legislation apart from Comprehensive Immigration Reform. (RIFA).
Dreamers will be coming by bus from all over the United States. They will arrive in Washington D.C. starting on Sunday, July 18th, 2010. Monday, July 19th, 2010, will be spent in fellowship, as students are trained on how to tell their story to the media and how to lobby. All participants will have an opportunity to go on lobby visits in support of their cause.
