Michael BennetIndeed it would be unbelievable to have a Senator who would put himself in a common American taxpayer’s shoes and speak from the ordinary person’s perspective. We have such a person in Michael Bennet, the junior U.S. Senator from Colorado. With his proposal for sweeping reform in Washington, he is the new revolutionary.

But Bennet may find opposition to his lobbying reform proposals from his own Democrat colleagues such as Senator Even Bayh and others who are due to retire in November. When asked about his future plans Bayh didn't provide many details and refused to specifically rule out a career as a lobbyist, which under Bennet's proposal would not be allowed.

Two other retiring Democratic Senators, Chris Dodd from Connecticut and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, would not be very happy campaigners for Bennett’s proposals either.

Ivan Adler of McCormick Group, an executive search consulting firm, commented, “If you think of the Senate as the Roman Coliseum, those gladiators who know the arena are the most valuable, and today those are Senate Democrats.”

Further, Dorgan made a statement, “I would like to do some teaching and would also like to work on energy policy in the private sector.” When a long term Washington insider uses term such as “private sector” it is nearly always a code word for a lobbying firm.

Senator Bennet has his fight cut out for him. His success will depend on how effectively he can catch the imagination of American people. His task will not be easier on the heel of the recent Supreme Court decision regarding campaign spending.

The feeble voice of Main Street masses is often drowned by the megaphone of K Street. People nevertheless shall find hope in Senator Bennet’s stand and fervently look forward to see others joining him in Washington.
