Canadians Stand On Guard For National Anthem
It's the two thousand and tens, man. Women can vote, get a job, hold public office, and start a blog. So why can't they command patriotic love?
The verse in "O Canada" that reads "True patriot love in all thy sons' command" has been criticized by politically correct Canadians who feel a more unisex line is appropriate. On the advice of a female senator, Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper tried to shoehorn this concern into a major speech last week, and well, that backfired. Canadians were so incensed that they went from "nice" to "less nice" about the situation, and Harper has dropped the subject altogether.
It might be a sound idea to not try this right after Canada hosted a successful Winter Olympics, bringing home quatorze médaillés d'or.
Niagara-based blogger Doug Draper was sick of the discussion mostly because — get this — there are more important matters to be addressed. Those are, I believe: fixing unemployment, balancing the government budget, and what everyone's plans are for International Women's Day.
