Conservative Alabama Candidate Hates Being Called Liberal

Bradley Byrne / Huntsville TimesLet's try to get through this story as best we can with a straight face.

Governor candidate Bradley Byrne, a self-described conservative Republican from northern Alabama and a devout Christian, is being attacked by True Republican PAC for actually being as liberal as presidents Clinton and Obama. They say he even supported teaching evolution and said "parts of the Bible ... are not true." Gasp!

Byrne's response? The whole attack ad is a lie. After being called out on his controversial Bible truthiness stance, in a statement he said "every single word of it is true." The blog Apple Eaters notes that the ellipsis stood in place for the word "literally" and completely changes the context.

Still, Byrne said he was misquoted in an interview with the (Mobile, Alabama) Press-Register and wanted to set the record straight back in January. Because knowing exactly how he interprets the Bible will be crucial to how he fixes problems in the state.

In all fairness, The Real Bradley Byrne website cites some points of doubletalk that don't involve Christian morals or evolution. And with the primary elections to be held on June 1, Byrne has a slim lead in polls over Republican challengers Roy Moore, Robert Bentley, and Kay Ivey. Hopefully any debates held between them don't involve Bible trivia.
