California Dream Activists talked to young children today at Escuela Tlatelolco in Denver, Colorado. The activists are on theirway to a national assembly in Washington D.C. Their mission, along with “Dreamers” from all over the nation, is to ask Congress to support the Dream Act.

Children of undocumented immigrants have fought long and hard for at their chance at upward mobility. Most of these youths were brought here by their parents as toddles, so they had no part in crossing the border “without papers”. Yet, most colleges refuse to admit children of undocumented workers. The schools that do admit them charge out-of-state tuition even though these young people have lived in-state for many years. Scholarships are not available to children of undocumented immigrants and statistics show, school-yard to prison-yard is a common path for all children, regardless of legal status and race, when they are denied the chance at a college education.

The Dream Act solves this problem by allowing college aged kids to go to school. They earn an eventual path to citizenship by following strict requirements, including staying out of trouble, and a choice of graduating from college or serving in the U.S. military. Only those who came to the US before their 16th birthday qualify, and a GED is required. Obviously, in order to compete in college or serve in our armed forces, the youths must be proficient in English.
