Joe Wilson Lies At No. 7 On Twitter's Yearly Trends
Hey, remember the "you lie" outburst during a President Obama speech to Congress back in September? Vaguely? That was South Carolina's Republican congressman Joe Wilson.
Since everyone in the world is busy making their lists (kids for toys, and journalists for the hell of it), Twitter unleashed their top trending topics for the year:
1. Michael Jackson
2. Susan Boyle
3. Adam Lambert
4. Kobe Bryant
5. Chris Brown
6. Chuck Norris
7. Joe Wilson
8. Tiger Woods
9. Christian Bale
10. Alex Rodriguez
What an odd outlier. Here we have nine celebrities and then an elected official who will probably never do anything of such notoriety or significance. Barack Obama didn't even make this list!
I'm also a little surprised Sarah Palin didn't make the cut. Then again, rogues aren't interested in such accolades.
This should tell you all you need to know about the thought process of the tweeting populous. The only subject that's important is what's happening right now. When Wilson threw out that spur-of-the-moment and absolutely polite rebuttal, it became almost as, but not as viral as swine flu, which was No. 2 on the "news events" list.
The top political story was #iranelection, with "Iran" and "Tehran" rounding out the top five. This might've been the ongoing saga that turned Twitter from a cute little toy into a useful and perhaps necessary tool. Or perhaps it, too, was merely another mainstream fad, signified by the green avatar craze.
