Obama Declares End to Combat Operations in Iraq; Stops Short of Declaring Victory - Page 3
I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but holy crap, that’s damn skippy, Mr. President...although it’s not like I needed him to remind me that our troops have kicked some major league ass despite any obstacles that have been in their way.
At the end of the day, the "vast right-wing conspiracy" part of my brain almost wonders if the current president simply could not bring himself to publicly admit that the previous president's troop surge in Iraq might have actually worked. It could be that the current president, still a senator at the time, very bluntly declared that the surge would have the opposite effect of its intended purpose, stating that it would make sectarian violence worse in Iraq.
No, it certainly couldn't be that.
Here's my bottom line. I'm extremely fortunate to personally know several current and former members of our Armed Forces across all branches, most of which have served in some capacity in Iraq. Regardless of how the Iraqi government handles matters on their own in the future, I hope that my friend and blood (you guys know who you are) and every one of our military personnel that have been there and back have at least some sense of accomplishment when it comes to your service in Iraq. Each one of you had a hand in freeing an entire nation from a murderous regime and giving them control of their own destiny, which I think warrants even one small victory lap.
So even though it was met with criticism years ago when it was unfurled on that banner, and while there are still many moons between now and the end of all combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, damn it, I have no problem saying it right now:
Mission accomplished, guys. Mission friggin' accomplished.
