PAZ Looks to Reform Immigration With Votes
While some immigration activists are planning protest campaigns in the aftermath of Arizona SB 1070, the most vicious anti-immigration legislation passed in the U.S., other activists are after the root of the problem. In this case, the root is Republican Governor Jan Brewer and her Republican buddies in the Arizona state senate.
Promise Arizona (PAZ) plans on getting people to the ballot box in November. In order to be effective, they are seeking an energetic team who can join with local volunteers to bring the message of power-to-the-people through registering the pro-immigrant community to vote.
This is a call to action for individuals interested in being part of civil rights history. Organizers call it “The Freedom Summer of the civil rights movement.” It is an opportunity for life experiences, for personal growth and to be part of the system that can change the future of state politics in Arizona and as such, the future of the nation.
Promise Arizona says, “The PAZ Fellows Program will create a volunteer structure and action plan that will enable out-of-state volunteers to join local organizing designed to register thousands of voters and create long-term change in Arizona.”
To qualify for the PAZ fellowship you must be at least 18 years old, travel to Arizona, and agree to work 30 hours a week for at least three weeks. Promise Arizona will provide free training and match the PAZ Fellows with host families. There is a $100 per week stipend for food and travel.
