PC Leprechauns Object To "McCarthyism" Pejorative
At times I have difficulty authenticating the satirical value of conservative satire. Having said that, I don't trust Irishmen, and would not be surprised if they used March 17 as their April Fools Day to permeate the news outlets with contrived outrage.
But this might be a serious grievance. The National Review Online's William Gavin blogged at The Corner that the term "McCarthyism," used in honor of amateur commie-hunter Senator Joseph McCarthy, is offensive to all people of Irish heritage and should be stricken from the liberal lexicon.
McCarthy is an ethnically identifiable Irish Catholic name, yet it describes despicable political behavior that transcends ethnic and religious backgrounds. No other American ethnic, religious, or racial group has been so stigmatized for so long, with so little public outcry, by a word that is acceptable in polite society.
Gavin concedes that Irish weren't really offended back in the '50s when the term became popularized, and yet he insists that now, in 2010, the term is just so offensive that it demeans the shamrock-wielding lads and lasses on the Emerald Isle.
Yes. It's far more offensive than a holiday in which everyone pretends to be Irish by commencing alcohol consumption at 7 a.m.
