Sonia Sotomayor: A Coup for Diversity and Our Nation
It has been a banner year for diversity in the United States, beginning with the election of Barack Obama, the country's first non-white president, and then with the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.
Sonia Sotomayor is of Puerto Rican descent and hails from the South Bronx in New York. She was the first Hispanic Federal Judge in the U.S. and was nominated to the Supreme Court by Barack Obama in May of this year. She was confirmed by a vote of 68-31 in August as an Associate Justice. This ground breaking appointment, makes Sotomayor the first Hispanic Justice and only the third female Justice to serve on the Supreme Court.
Sonia Sotomayor attended Princeton University on a full scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She obtained her J.D. on scholarship from the Yale School of Law in 1979. Her stellar work history and merit took her to this pinnacle of success. She put the phrase wise Latina on many lips this summer. I am looking forward with great anticipation to her wise Latina input on Supreme Court decisions.
Great things are happening in this country and I am proud to witness them and proud to call attention to them. As an American, I am using my voice and proclaiming loudly my approval and support of the advances we as a nation are making. Intellect, wisdom, experience and morals are the attributes we must focus on in the individuals that we elect as our leaders. Neither gender, nor race should enter the arena on these decisions. The more we follow the path that we have embarked upon so clearly this past year, the greater this country will become.
