The Day After The Storm
I am not sure if any other administration had slammed its base like the current one in Washington did, and what the consequences of that was. The President, his Vice, and his White House Press Secretary in their infinite wisdom repeatedly demeaned their base, calling them professional left, whiners, and other choice labels. The result? Youth, on whose vote the President was elected, stayed home, and the Democrats got a drubbing in the mid-term election.
It was indeed a rear chutzpah on the part of the current administration, especially if you think it was that bunch of whiners who put them in the White House. And despite claims otherwise from many quarters, I would submit that the race issue is not really that important to today’s electorate. It was the white voters who elected the first black President.
Despite the blind sight of Democratic leaders many saw this debacle coming, including this author. In an article published before the election David Michael Green wrote, “Obama amply deserves the lashing and humiliation he’s going to receive Tuesday and then again two years later. The White House is no place for the cowardly. In normal times that would be an embarrassment. In a moment of national crisis, it's a sin. But when the republic itself is being threatened, and when the very ideas of democracy and freedom are in jeopardy, timidity is treason.”
David Michael Green is not a career politician; he is a professor of political science at Hofstra University in New York. How did Prof. Green sound so prophetic, when the Democratic Party Leaders were clueless? Even on Tuesday morning Nancy Pelosi affirmed that her party was going to retain the House. The answer may be found in Prof. Green’s analysis. He wrote, “George W. Bush was indisputably the worst president in American history, but now Obama is remarkably giving him a run for it. Bush poisoned the body politic, but Obama is standing by and watching it die. Obama's crimes are of incalculable historical damage for the same reason that most scholars of the presidency (used to) judge James Buchanan to have been the worst president ever. Both fiddled while the republic burned.”
