The Paranoid Guide to Better Living: The Doomsday Shelter

Well, if the whole flap about the 2012 prediction isn't enough to convince you that doomsday paranoia is catching on, maybe the sudden resurgence of Doomsday Shelters being built might be enough proof. Frankly, if you've been around long enough and depending on your culture or particular belief system, the world is always ending. However, now we have the technology and the state of fear created by a failing economy to fully support a proper paranoid state.
The Vivos shelter network is leading the resurgence in underground shelters, selling Timeshare type partial ownerships in their doomsday shelters. Vivos plans on constructing 20 fortified, underground shelters in which they will be basically co-opting space. They are starting with a 13,000-square-foot underground facility that used to belong to the government, hidden in the dirt somewhere outside of Barstow, Calif. 134 people will be able to call this shelter home when doomsday strikes, at a cost of $50,000 for adults and $25,000 for children. That's not too bad considering the rest of the human race will most likely be obliterated.
Even though his website has a doomsday clock on it, counting down to December 31, 2012, Vivos founder Robert Vicino insists that he's not profiting off the fear of the public, "You don't think of the person who sells you a fire extinguisher as taking advantage of your fear," he says. "The fact that you may never use that fire extinguisher doesn't make it a waste or bad.
"We're not creating the fear; the fear is already out there. We're creating a solution."
Here's my thought though. Say the shelters are in the desert and you live in California. The threat is giant Tsunami caused by a massive Earthquake. How in the hell do you make it out of town - ahead of the traffic and panic - to get to your shelter that you have pre-paid for? Basically, how can you see doomsday coming?
So based on that, what are you paying for? Are you paying for peace of mind? Using Vicino's own analogy, that's like buying a fire extinguisher for the kitchen, and storing it under your desk at work. He is right, the fear is already out there - based on blatant ignorance - so Vivos is not creating it, but in my opinion - they sure as hell are propagating and profiting off it.
