Weiner; The Legitmacy of His Sex Addiction

You like to have sex, I like to have sex and we all like to have sex. It’s kind of like that song about ice cream and that we all scream for ice cream. However, the truth is that just because we like sex and we like ice cream, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we are addicted.

Anthony Weiner is the latest in a string of public figures that is tugging at the strings of public sympathy by checking into a treatment facility for sex addiction. As mentioned in an innumerable amount of publications, Weiner is under the microscope of public and political scrutiny for “sexting” over Twitter with pictures of an erotic nature to a 21-year old girl.

Tiger Woods and Jesse James have each checked themselves into sex addiction treatment facilities. They too have each been guilty of quite a bit of infidelity; some might even argue that Tiger has given new meaning to the word.
The question is what is the legitimacy behind sex addiction and treatments for it? Who diagnoses one as a sex addict?

Sex addiction is very much a reality. A qualified psychologist in the topic would no doubt be the person that would determine whether or not there is an actual addiction. Many would think seeing as how this is not taking place in the case of Weiner, that he was never actually given a diagnosis. He and his PR people have given him a prognosis for the sake of and in the eyes of the public.

A real sex addiction would actually be much more severe than that of simple cases of infidelity. In this case, Tiger Woods would be much closer to what might be considered a genuine addiction. Sex addiction should not be confused with a desire for variety. Many would argue in the case that variety is the spice of life.
