Winning The Public Opinion War On Immigration

The war of words. It begins.

Arizona governor Jan Brewer is the face of Arizona's new immigration law that allows police officers to use "reasonable" discretion to ask persons of interest for proof of citizenship. While the Nazi Germany comparisons are starting to dwindle somewhat, sentiments of boycotts and xenophobic claims still run rampant, despite most of America supporting it. President Obama took a safe middle ground by recognizing the magnitude of the problem by coupling it with his concerns over this new law.

Governor Brewer's new ad blasting Obama for making a joke about Arizona at the annual White House Correspondents Association Dinner because, jeez, jokes are bad.

Of course, he's not trivializing the issue; he's lampooning the solution and what could happen to a Mexican-American citizen if they don't have the right documentation on hand. A joke about Obama's health care bill doesn't marginalize the grave need for better coverage for all Americans, does it? Do we really need Al Franken to analyze this joke for us?

So good on Brewer for driving home the point and need for this bill. Hopefully most of us understand the problem (although, sure, drug smugglers should be prosecuted, and if they aren't, then how does this bill prevent that?) and don't take the problem lightly. All this humor is focused on possible solutions.
