Dear Kanye, We Don't Care That You Joined Twitter
Kayne West joined Twitter and the world stopped.
Well, maybe not stopped but he sure did get a lot of social media coverage.
My question is, who really gives a rats ass?
Is it that important when a celebrity joins Twitter? Why is that news? Does it really matter and does it warrant all the hype?
The answer, unfortunately, is yes. We live in a society that is fascinated with celebrities and people in the news. Kayne West is one of those headline grabbing types of celebs who, just by doing something, creates news.
Just look at his visit to Facebook and all the hype that created:
As I write this, West has about 325,000 followers and is not following anyone.
Why would anyone want to follow someone that's not following them? After all, Twitter is an engagement platform right? Aren't we supposed to be connecting with people with like interests. Aren't we supposed to share links, converse about timely topics and have a little back and forth banter with friends and colleagues?
So why, dare I ask, that someone who has over 325,000 followers really matter?
Well, the answer is that we're obsessed as a society with fame. Just look at any of the celebs on Twitter. They all have zillions of followers and there's very little, if any, engagement.
What if brands would act that way? What if company's jumped on Twitter and just wanted a million followers and didn't care about engagement? There would be hell to pay right?
So why is it any different with celebs?
Think about it.
