Eight Generation X Blogs To Read Now

You know how to tell whether or not you're a Baby Boomer, Gen Xer or a member of Gen Y? If you don't readily know, then chances are you're a member of Generation X. Based on my experience, the reason is because Boomers always know they're Boomers and Millennials (Gen Y) always know they're Millennials. Blame it on generational pride. It's the Gen Xers, stuck with a name that became a sort of pejorative, who don't know what generation to which they belong.

In addition, part of the collective persona of Generation X (those former latchkey kids by broadest definition born between 1961 and 1981) is resistance to group identification. (Add distrust of institutions to that list.) Once referred to by older generations with the disparaging term "slacker", Gen Xers are sadly regarded as the most neglected generation in modern history.

Today, Gen Xers number 48 million as compared to 78 million Baby Boomers and about 74 million Gen Yers (Millennials). Still, the generation misidentified by researchers with the unlucky number 13 and mischaracterized by words like grunge are making great strides in their personal and professional lives. Despite the highs and lows associated with Gen X's turbulent coming of age, as well as the booms and busts of the last 20 years, the generation has emerged with its own set of values, the greatest of which is time with family. You don't have to look far to find a Gen Xer who craves flexibility and work-life balance. In fact, the consequence of all that neglect may be a tendency on the part of Gen X to overparent their own children.
