Facebook is the social media king. That's absolutely no secret. With 500 million users, they are on top of the social media hill and are about to take over the mobile social media hill if things keep progressing the way they are.

Currently, Facebook has about 150 million mobile users, up from just 100 million in April (a number that CEO Mark Zuckerberg had thrown out at the f8 developer conference in April). The company is absolutely counting on mobile devices for future success, according to Facebook's head of mobile products, Eric Tseng.

“Mobile is fast becoming our growth lever,” Tseng told attendees at the MobileBeat 2010 conference in San Francisco this week.

Over the next six months, Facebook’s mobile platforms will “catch up” with its PC browser-based interface, Tseng mentioned.

On the horizon are anticipated updates to both the Android and iPhone apps, according to Tseng.

The company is also working to expand its “social graph,” which extends features of Facebook onto other sites, to take advantage of mobile use.

Tseng also said that mobile is bigger than the smart-phone market that dominates most countries, adding that in many poor countries, mobile devices are oftentimes the first point of content with the Internet. As a result, Facebook is developing ways for them to become members and use the social network without ever starting up a PC.
