Linkin Park Crowdsourcing Content for Lastest Album

The internet is one big rolodex of people trying to connect with other people. Blogs provide a voice. Video creates a face. And music is an escape.

Of course, the music industry has been hammered by the popularity of the Internet, information sharing and obviously illegal downloading.

However, with the help of social media, the internet can actually help both the consumer (get discovered) and bands (who often complain that they lose out on royalties when it comes to digital music).

What if the worlds were to converge?

Well, the convergence is Linkin Park.

For their latest album, Linkin Park is leveraging the power of social media and the Internet to create content for their latest offering, "A Thousand Suns."

Specifically, the Grammy Award winning band is using MySpace (calling it "Featuring You") and a music application that allows fans to create their own original version of the band’s new single “The Catalyst” and ends with the rare opportunity for one worthy fan to have his or her song appear on the next album.

One of the bands leaders, Mike Shinoda (also of Rising Tide fame), said in a statement:

“In the lifetime of Linkin Park, the evolution of community and music technology has blurred the line between artist and fan. With the release of our new album we want to push it even further and so we are making a commitment to our fans that is a first of its kind: We are blindly dedicating a spot on our new album to something unknown. That space is reserved for you and we’re confident that you will create something that we can be proud to include on “A Thousand Suns.” This is not just a “fan-remix” contest; we want to collaborate with you. This effort is made possible by the global 360 music platform of MySpace, and the dedication and talent of our incredible fans. Thank you. We look forward to hearing your submissions.”
