Promoting On Facebook Without Annoying People

Facebook has taken the whole world by storm. On last count, there were more than 300 million active users happily poking, super-poking, chatting or writing on someone’s wall. It is huge, by any standards.

Businesses, websites, and bloggers started using Facebook to fulfill their promotional needs and to have a social presence. While some of them succeeded in leveraging its potential, most of them felt that they could not successfully merge the social and promotional aspects of the platform.

A lot of people complained that while using Facebook to promote their brand/ website/blog, they lost out on a lot of things such as adding to their personal contacts and being an active contributor to their social space.

A platform is what people make it. It is identified by the people using it and their behavior determines its behavior. Same is the case with Facebook. There is a general trend which inhibits crass promotion on the social stream. Here is one such example, experienced by yours truly:

The Solution

The solution is really simple – now that the behavior of 300 million people cannot be changed, you have to work around it.

The Workaround

Stop using your Facebook profile for promotions – it's your personal space and limit it to all things personal and social. People do not want links to come knocking at their live and news feed unless they have agreed to have them knocked.

You have to make them "agree" to receive promotions and links. The best way to do that is to make a Facebook page. A page, which is appealing, full of attractive copy, and makes people want to become a fan of.

Once they are a fan, they have officially authorised you to bombard them, which you’ll of course do in a very subtle manner.
