Social Media Supporting Charity
LinkedIn is a network of professionals. This week, I've seen it as a network of professionals interested in making the world a better place.
That's a network I'm proud to be part of.
Campaign #1 - Building a Library
Rohit Suppal started a discussion in Twitter Innovators this week about an organization trying to build a library in India. The group is Our World Our Stories and they have teamed up with Grolier International to build a library in India.
How does social media fit in? To get the library, all Our World Our Stories has to do is build their Twitter following to 100,000. You can get all the details at their site, and you can follow them at http://twitter.com/owos.
Campaign #2 - Demonstrating Social Media's Power
Linda Parkinson-Hardman started Monday, 23 Nov 09.
What she started is an experiment to show the our ability to use social media for a good purpose. Linda has written a guide to using LinkedIn and is donating 40% of the proceeds to KIVA, The Shaw Trust, Grameen Foundation and the British Consultancy Charity Trust.
Linda's objective is to create a conversation around her efforts that results in 200,000 copies of the guide being purchased in 30 days.
Thank you to Kathie Stamou posting about this in the Innovative Marketing group. And you can read all about Linda's efforts at http://www.whoselinked.com.
What do You Think?
Obviously I agree with the effort being made by Rohit and Linda.
What do you think? Do you agree with this pay it forward approach to social media?
For the effort of following Rohit's group on Twitter, you can help get a library built for children in India. And for 4.99 (GBP), you can get Linda's guide to using LinkedIn and help four charities.
Seeing Linda's and Rohit's examples inspired me to make public something that had been quite secret. Half of every purchase of my latest book is being divided equally among three charities. Now I'm wondering what you think?
Do you like knowing that part of your purchase is supporting a charity?
