Blog Focus: Chris Bosh is the Robin Hood of Domain Names
Blog Focus is Technorati's daily roundup of the top stories as told by the bloggers of the world. Each day five posts, no matter how popular or nascent, will be selected by editors to portray a general unscientific reaction to discussion points around the 'Net.
Whether it's his funny YouTube contests, races against fellow NBA Twitterers to get the most followers or general accessibility to fans, Chris Bosh has helped grow his stature through social networking.
But now, after winning a lawsuit to reclaim misappropriated domain names for several NBA players, Bosh has gone from Internet funnyman to savvy businessman. Several bloggers have reactions to Bosh fighting the power:
James Schmehl, Full-Court Press — "Pistons forwards Tayshaun Prince and Charlie Villanueva will be receiving early Christmas gifts from Toronto Raptors forward and newly-named “cyber-hero” Chris Bosh."
The Last Angry Fan — "Bosh went after some douchebag who had beaten the Raptor star to the website name chrisbosh.com…and won. Bosh got his domain name back, as well as some punitive damages…and more. Try 800 other domain names this jerkass had been hording…all related to fellow NBA players."
TrueHoop —"Also on the list is AaronAfflalo.com, even though that Denver player spells his first name "Arron.""
FanIQ — "If someone was ambitious enough and had the foresight to reserve these domain names, should they be compensated for them? On one hand, it seems like blackmail. But on the other hand, no one "owns" a domain name unless they actually go out and get it for themselves."
Mouthpiece Sports — "Bosh is being a reverse Robin Hood, by stealing from the domain squatter and giving to the rich. If any of these players want the domain with their name on it, Bosh is handing them over free of charge."
