Blog Focus: For one day, Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions are Kings
It's not often that the Detroit Lions are the toast of the NFL, but after a last-second win over the Cleveland Browns that featured Lions rookie quarterback throwing for 422 yards and five touchdown passes in the game, and also throwing the winning touchdown pass with a badly injured left shoulder.
So let's look at the blogosphere not making fun of the Lions for once:
Detroit Lions Weblog: "I have witnessed similarly courageous performances from Lions Qb’s in the past. Jon Kitna absolutely laid it all on the line three years ago, during the Lions 6-2 start, at a time that seems like 20 years ago now, in a home game against the Vikings. Kitna was, in my opinion at the time, the toughest and most driven Lions player that I had seen. After the last two weeks, I believe he has company (from Stafford), and will likely be surpassed in the near future."
Detroit4lyfe: "A part of me tells me Stafford didn't even realize this until the Browns stupidly called timeout as Daunte Culpepper was on the field ready to take the final snap of the game, barring another penalty. During the timeout Stafford excitedly tried to evade team doctors and get back on the field to finish what he started — a Lions comeback after being down 21 in the first quarter and cap off one of the best games a Lions QB has ever had in the history of the "illustrious" franchise, as a rookie."
Deadspin: "It was famously said of Layne that "he never lost a game, he just ran out of time." Well, Matthew Stafford did run out of time yesterday and still managed to pull off a legendary come-from behind victory on the last play against the Browns. With only one arm. Urban legend has it that Layne once got in a car accident while driving drunk on a Saturday night, then showed up on Sunday morning and led the Lions to a win. Stafford—who attended the same high school as Layne, don'tcha know—picked himself up off the sideline with a busted shoulder to throw a game-winning touchdown. (He sort of had no choice. Daunte Culpepper sure didn't want to do it and putting on a helmet would have ruined the whole LPGA golfer look that Drew Stanton had going on.)"
