Chase Utley and Ryan Howard Both Set Records in the World Series
Chase Utley hit his fifth home run in the World Series last night, and by now, everyone knows that tied Reggie Jackson for the most in a single World Series.
But teammate Ryan Howard tied for a less desirable record of his own: most strikeouts in a World Series.
Howard, on the other hand, wants nothing more to do with swinging and missing. He is batting .158 (3-for-19) in the Series and is 1-for-14 since he hit a pair of doubles in Game 1.
Howard's 12th strikeout came between solo home runs for Utley and Raul Ibanez against left-hander Phil Coke in the bottom of the seventh of Game 5. So, Howard can't say it's all good Yankees pitching that has him struggling.
Both left-handed hitters will have to face at least one more lefty, as Andy Pettite starts game six. If they extend to a seventh game, lefty C.C. Sabathia will pitch. Neither are a problem for Utley — he's homered off of C.C. Howard, on the other hand, has only one hit and 10 Ks in the last four games.
