The Doha 21st Century Leaders Awards gala dinner was last Friday in Doha, Qatar.

Some 800 guests participated in the art auction which was a part of the ceremony and gala dinner raising $1.26mn, the proceeds of which are to be donated to various charitable programmes chosen by the celebrities involved.

The most money was raised by a painting featuring the footprint of the LA Galaxy star David Beckham which was sold for $500,000. David Beckham- A Celebration is by the well known contemporary artist Sacha Jafri and is the only painting featuring the both the signature and the footprint of the footballing superstar. The works of many international and locally based artists were exhibited during the Doha 21st Century Leaders Art Exhibition at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, including Sacha Jafri's who contributed his painting which was originally valued at $1.4mn to the auction.

Many stars were involved in the event which saw Sir Ben Kingsley receive the 'outstanding humanitarian award' while tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, who could not attend the gala dinner because of playing commitments in Doha, were given the “outstanding leadership” award. Among the other celebrities honoured were actor Josh Hartnet and filmmakers Danny Boyle and Christian Colsen

The great amount of money raised by Becks footprint just goes to show, that everyone, everywhere loves David Beckham. Becks fans in the Middle East will get to see him and the English team who are visiting the Middle East for the first time where they play Brazil in a friendly on November 14. However, it may not be the last visit especially if Qatar are successful in their bid for the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup.
