Joe Mauer Wins the American League MVP Award
While it seemed to be a bit of a formality after he led the American League in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS while also playing solid defense and one of the most physically demanding positions on the field, Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer was named AL MVP Monday.
Mauer hit .365 with 28 home runs and 96 RBIs this season. He also had a 1.031 OPS and won a Gold Glove. More impressively, he still put up those numbers after missing nearly a month of the season.
Simply put, his offensive numbers this season were far superior to any other contender for this award, and he also led a late-season surge that helped the Twins win the AL Central and make the playoffs.
Mauer would've been a unanimous MVP if not for one person voting for Miguel Cabrera. No word on which writer it was, but it if it was a Detroit writer, it wouldn't be the first time they were guilty of some shenanigans that cost a deserving player a unanimous award.
