A few other teams wound up a sniff away from being in the Big Dance, only to get buried in post-season purgatory. Morehead State, Akron, and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) all finished second in their conference in both the regular season and the conference tournament. Akron was one basket away from an automatic bid.

Now, all three will play in the College Basketball Invitational tournament. Never heard of it? That's the 16-team post-season tournament for those squads that got turned down by both the NCAA and NIT tournaments.

Lots of people will be devoting both time, and money to the major tournament, but just as interesting will be how these teams respond to being given the lesser reward of a minor tournament. Do they take it as fire to charge to victory? Or do they give up and start dreaming of summer vacation a little to early?
