Steve Smith Puts an End to Boring Sideline Interviews
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has long been known as one of the more outspoken players in the league, and for the second time this season, he's delivered a beautiful moment for the NFL, caught on video.
Earlier in the year, he told quarterback Jake Delhomme, that while he still considered Delhomme a friend, he didn't think much of the way the Panthers QB had been playing.
After Sunday's game, he took on one of the biggest scourges in the sports broadcasting world: the boring sideline interview. While most are filled with athlete-speak cliches like "we're just taking it one game at a time" or "I just want to credit God and my teammates," Smith talked specifically about trash talk from Vikings cornerback Benny Sapp and how he responded to it, and even spiced up the typical God reference:
You know, first, you know, I just gotta thank my Lord Jesus Christ, you know, without him we wouldn't be here. But, 5-8 or 8-5, you gotta play. This is why I feed my family.
The sideline interview is supposed to provide insight into what actually happens on the field, and this is the first one I can remember actually doing that.
