UK News Dominated by Athletes
Three sports personalities have dominated the headlines in the UK this week.
Tiger Woods who crashed his car at 2 a.m. outside his own house, said that his wife smashed the back window of his SUV with a golf club because she was trying to get him out. Whether or not that version is true is being debated on TMZ, the celebrity site which first broke the news about Michael Jackson's death.
Following the golfing star closely, various UK newspapers, including The Guardian, have been very quick to report what other golfers are saying about their colleague, who has now pulled out of his own charity event. Whether there is any truth in the speculation that he has been playing away from home is not clear, but what is evident is that Woods has managed to avoid police thus far, although the police may still ask for his medical records to prove a charge of driving under the influence. So the question has to be is he just too rich for the Windemere, Florida, police department to deal with?
Scottish tennis ace Andy Murray, who appears to have split from his girlfriend of four years, also has been media fodder. A split-up is always a sad business, but what is even sadder is that the newspapers have already started speculating on who his new girlfriend might be. Give him a break! He might just need some time to get over a longish relationship breaking down. Even the uber-wealthy sports stars need a bit of time to shed a couple of tears and dust themselves down before moving on. Money is no defense to a heavy heart after all.
Then to add some top spin to the day's news we have Serena WIlliams. Contrary to her name, the tennis star was less than quiet when playing in the US Open earlier in the year as she threatened to stuff a tennis ball down the lineswoman's throat. It was match point but still ... Williams has just been fined over £100,000 by the International Tennis Federation for her outburst, proving that money can sometimes defend you against saying exactly what you feel at the time.
