La Russa Replacement Knows Cardinals
ST. LOUIS — The Cardinals hire one of their own by bringing back former catcher Mike Matheny as team manager. The managerial rookie takes over from legendary retiree Tony La Russa on the heels of an unlikely World Series title.
After spending two seasons with the Giants, Methany retired from the major leagues in February of 2007. He returned to the Cardinals in 2008 as a special adviser and has held various staff positions with the club.
General manager John Mozeliak made the offer to Matheny last week but asked to keep it quiet until the official announcment on Monday. Mozeliak believes Matheny's lack of managerial experience will not be an issue.
"That's something I've experienced myself, and I know what it's like going from maybe a less leadership role to one where you're thrust into it," Mozeliak said. "I think he has that skill set."
Matheny should be a good fit for the club with its divers roster of veterans and youth. With no better starting rotation his rookie season should be a great test of those skills.
